Serious legitimate errors regarding the thinking approach of al-Qaeda

In the name of Allah , the Merciful, the most kind.

Praise be to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon whom no prophet will come after; Prophet Muhammad.

To proceed:

The one who contemplates the reality of the extremist armed organizations, particularly the (al-Qaeda), finds major imbalance in the thinking approach of their leaders; they think there is no way for the rebirth of the nation and the honour of its religion but in waging a general war on the entire world from East to West so that distinguished conquest and victory may be achieved.

Would that they had abided by the Sharia codes regarding fighting in the Cause of Allah when they declared so! But, unfortunately, they did not. They even engaged in fierce wars without having a correct understanding of the Islamic religion, or a mature legitimate policy. Thus, they have made four serious legitimate mistakes; that history will write them down, forever, on its black pages, till they come back to the right understanding of Sharia and drive away from the seduction of misguidance and desires.

Firstly, not abiding by the Sharia regarding fighting in the Cause of Allah. Thus, you do not find the group leaders have a clear understanding that can control their actions, nor a legitimate policy that can restrain individuals. For example, everyone of the spokesmen of the group such as Usamah bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri appoints himself, while they are not qualified to this, as the Caliph of Muslims and the one who is entrusted to speak on the behalf of the whole nation and that he has the legitimate right to call people for war and appoints the leaders for fighting in the Cause of Allah.

Furthermore, we find them declare war against all nations of the world as a whole. The organization did not leave any state, whether it is Islamic or not, but declared war against it. We can easily notice their criminal acts that are, in fact, more sinful and imply more corruption than the acts of highwaymen, and spread all over the Arab and Islamic states. For example, the explosion of Riyadh, a second in Casablanca, a third in Jordon, a fourth in Pakistan, and a fifth in Bali in Indonesia. Actually, all of that defamed the image of Islam and Muslims in the mirror of the whole word. This even made the whole foreign world declare hostility against Muslims, and thus the fire of sedition broke out and people became in great turmoil, and there is neither might nor power except with Allah.

Secondly, limiting the whole concept of the Islamic religion to (fighting in the Cause of Allah). In this way, they mixed between means and objectives. In fact, fighting should be a means only, not an objective. The main objective is to belief in the Oneness of Allah the Almighty as He the Almighty says (what means): {And fight them until there is no Fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah. And if they cease – then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do.} [Al-Anfaal: 39]

Also, the Prophet, peace be upon him said: “I have been sent ahead of the Hour with the sword so that Allaah will be worshipped alone, and my provision has been placed in the shade of my spear, and humiliation has been decreed for those who go against my command, and whoever imitates a people is one of them.”

Thirdly, limiting the wide and comprehensive concept of Jihad in Islam to fighting in the Cause of Allah. The legitimate fact is that fighting is one of the forms of Jihad in the Cause of Allah. It also has a great status in Islam; however, this does not necessarily mean that it will include the whole meaning of Jihad. Accordingly, there is something greater than it namely; fighting with the word of argument and proof as Allah the Almighty says (what means): {So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with the Qur’an a great striving.} [Al-Furqan: 52]

A- Shaykh al-Islām ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy with him, said: “It is well known that fighting was prescribed out of necessity and if people were to believe through proofs and signs, then there would be no need to fighting. Explaining the signs and proofs of Islam is absolutely obligated; however, Jihad is prescribed for necessity.”

B- He, may Allah have mercy with him, also said: “Also, it is well known that Jihad includes many forms such as fighting by hand, fighting by argument, proof and invitation. Allah The Almighty says (what means): {And if We had willed, We could have sent into every city a warner. So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with the Qur’an a great striving.} [Al-Furqan: 51-52]

Allah The Almighty ordered him to strive against the disbelievers with Quran a great strive. This is chapter is revealed in Makkah before the immigration of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and before he was commanded to fight or given a permission of it. But rather, it was a Jihad with knowledge, heart, proof, and invitation not with fighting.

C- Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, may Allah have mercy with him, said: “Allah The Almighty commanded him to make Jihad since the moment he sent him saying (what means): {And if We had willed, We could have sent into every city a warner.} [Al-Furqan: 51-52]

This is a chapter that is revealed in Makkah in which the Prophet, peace be upon him, was commanded to strive against the disbelievers with argument, proof, and conveying Quran. Also, striving against the hypocrites is done with conveying argument, otherwise, they will be under the dominance of the Muslims. Allah The Almighty says: {O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.} [At-Tawbah: 73]

Accordingly, striving against the hypocrites is more difficult than striving against the disbelievers. It is the Jihad of the best individuals in the Islamic nations and inheritors of the Messengers. Those who fulfill, participate and support this form of Jihad is really few. Although they are few in number, they are the greater before Allaah The Almighty in status.

D- He, may Allah have mercy with him, also said: “The basic principles on which religion of Islam depends are knowledge and Jihad. Therefore, Jihad is of two forms: Firstly, Jihad with hand and swords, and those who take part in it are many. Secondly, Jihad with argument and proof, and this is the Jihad of the best followers of the Messengers. It is the Jihad of great scholars. It is the best of the two forms for it has great benefits, much costs and many enemies.

Allah The Almighty says (what means): {And if We had willed, We could have sent into every city a warner.} [Al-Furqan: 51-52]

This is a Jihad against them with Quran. It is the greater of the two forms of Jihad. It is also the Jihad of the hypocrites. Hypocrites did not fight Muslims; rather, they support them inwardly and even may fight their enemies (i.e. of Muslims). In spite of this fact, Allah The Almighty says (what means): {O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them.} [At-Tawbah: 73]

Fourthly, achieving a clear and great victory is not fulfilled by fighting in the Cause of Allah only, as it is the dominant perspective in Al-Qaeda organization; but rather, it has many other means as it was occurred in the treaty of Al-Hudaybiyyah and the security that occurred between Muslims and non-Muslims. Actually, this open0s the door widely to develop a dialogue to explain the reality of the Islamic religion, call to it and hold discussions about it as it was occurred in the treaty of Al-Hudaybiyyah. In it, Allah the Almighty revealed (what means): {Indeed, We have given you, [O Muhammad], a clear conquest. That Allah may forgive for you what preceded of your sin and what will follow and complete His favour upon you and guide you to a straight path. And [that] Allah may aid you with a mighty victory.} [Al-Fat-h: 1-3]

Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy with him, said: Allah’s saying: {Indeed, We have given you, [O Muhammad], a clear conquest.} means, clear and apparent victory. This Ayah is about the treaty at Al-Hudaybiyyah, which resulted in great goodness, including people embracing Islam in large crowds and having the chance to meet each other openly. During that time, the believers preached to the idolaters and thus beneficial knowledge and faith spread all around.

The prominent scholar Al-Shanqiti, may Allah have mercy with him, said: “The most correct opinion that the majority of the scholars have adopted is that the conquest means the treaty of Al-Hudaybiyyah because it is a great conquest.”

To explain this, this mentioned treaty is the cause that let Muslim gather with the disbelievers to invite them to Islam and explain for them its beauties. Thus, many of the Arab tribes adopted Islam due to this.

What makes this clearer is that those who witnessed the treaty of Al-Hudaybiyyah along with the Prophet, peace be upon him, in Dhu al-Qa’dah 6 A.H. were 1400.

When the Prophet, peace be upon him, intended to conquer Makkah when the disbelievers breached the treaty, his moving out was in Ramadan 8 A.H. He had along with him 10000 fighters. This really explains that the treaty mentioned above is one of the greatest conquests. That is because it was a cause of increasing the power and number of Muslims. The conquest mentioned does not refer to the conquest of Makkah, even if some scholars adopted this opinion.

I ask Allah to grant us all the two best things and good intention and understating in them for they really imply the happiness and salvation in this life and the life to come.
